The TONK scheme is for households that have significantly lost income due to the coronavirus crisis, making it difficult to pay fixed costs such as mortgage or rent. The scheme started earlier this year. It quickly became clear that the TONK was applied for less often than expected, and that the amount of financial compensation varied significantly from municipality to municipality. Awareness and budget needed to increase. The cabinet doubled the budget to 260 million euros. Minister Koolmees has frequently discussed the implementation of the scheme with municipal leaders, VNG, and Divosa.
Many municipalities adjust the scheme
The efforts have paid off. A survey by Divosa shows that many municipalities have adjusted the scheme in their municipality or intend to do so. For example, by increasing the benefits or eliminating the asset test. Municipalities are making great efforts to reach people who may be helped by the TONK, by actively re-approaching those who previously applied and by simplifying the application procedures.
Extended until September 30, 2021
The TONK scheme has, like the other schemes in the support package, been extended until September 30 of this year. Households in financial distress can therefore use the support for a longer period.
