The Province of Drenthe understands the concern caused by the sighting of a wolf near the primary school ’t Oelebröd in Ruinen. The safety of children, parents, and staff is always paramount. The province has been asked to assess the situation and we support this with knowledge and advice.

Explanation of the behavior

We are confronted with wolves in Drenthe. They can sometimes move through or along built-up areas. The wolf seen in Ruinen is probably a passing wolf. Our staff have not found it nearby. So far, there has been no approach towards people. If a wolf does come near people, escalation will follow the intervention guideline from the Wolf Plan. What the province and municipality do

The supervisors and enforcement officers of the province and the municipality will monitor the area in the coming period to determine if the wolf shows itself again. We are also in talks with the municipality and the school board and advise them on how to handle situations with wolves.

What people can do themselves?

  • Stay calm and keep your distance, preferably at least 100 meters.

  • If a wolf comes too close, slowly move away, speak loudly and make gestures.

  • In acute emergencies call 112.
