On February 26, Commissioner Arjen Gerritsen addressed the European Parliament about the proposed EU budget for 2028–2034. In his new role as EU budget spokesperson for the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), for which he was nominated by the Interprovincial Consultation (IPO), he emphasized the importance of a strong regional position in Europe.
Regional role under pressure
Much is at stake. From 2028 onwards, the role of provinces and their access to European funds will no longer be automatic. In the current proposal, the execution of many funds will be managed by the national government through a single national plan towards Brussels. CEMR therefore advocates making room for regional chapters within these national plans and reserving 30% of European funds for local and regional authorities. The execution role of regions must also be maintained.
Proven success of provinces
Gerritsen emphasized that the programs currently implemented by provinces are demonstrably successful: “Why fix what isn’t broken?” At the regional level, provinces can make a significant contribution to national and European challenges. Continuity is essential.
Debate recap
He conveyed this message on behalf of CEMR during an extensive debate in the Committee on Regional Development of the European Parliament. The debate can be watched via the European Parliament website.
