We are starting the update of the Regional Water Program (RWP). It is a legally required program under the Environmental Planning Act. Every 6 years we update this program. The current RWP runs until 2027. Therefore, we are now preparing a new program: the Gelderland Water Program (GPW).

Why we are starting now

The task from the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) to achieve good water quality is an important part of the new program. Therefore, we must align with the WFD planning. The strategic water goals will be included in the new Environmental Vision, which will be adopted in 2026. The GPW further elaborates these goals into policies and measures for 2028–2033.

What we will do in the coming period

We collect and update data for the WFD components. We are also working on a current package of measures for:

  • improving water quality
  • ensuring water safety (dike reinforcement)
  • maintaining the availability of fresh water (especially for drinking water and nature)
  • and making the water system resilient to weather extremes caused by climate change.

We coordinate with water boards, municipalities, the national government, Vitens, Rijkswaterstaat, and other partners. In autumn 2026, we will submit the draft GPW to the Provincial Council (PS). In early 2027, the formal public inspection period will follow. All residents and organizations in Gelderland can then respond to the draft program. After that, we will process the responses and the Gelderland Water Program will be definitively adopted by the end of 2027 at the latest.
