In the coming years, partners will collaborate to lower the eastern dam at three points. This will allow extra water to be discharged via the canal during high water levels in the Maas. In extreme situations, this will reduce the water level by approximately 15 to 20 centimeters. Neighborhoods along the Maas and Roer, such as the Maasplassen, the center of Roermond, Roer-Zuid, Hammerveld, and Herten, will directly benefit from this measure.
Deputy Michael Theuns emphasizes the importance of this project: “Water safety is essential for Limburg. With this project, we are not only protecting our residents and their living environment but also creating space for new recreational opportunities in the beautiful Maasplassen area.”
Alderman Dirk Franssen of the municipality of Roermond adds: “With this unique project, we are taking an important step towards a safer Maas Valley. We are not only making our region safer and more future-proof but also offering opportunities to further develop the Maasplassen area as a recreational and attractive urban area.”
Work on further planning will take place in the coming period. Execution is expected to start at the end of 2027.
