The Provincial Executive has appointed Mr. Abe Veenstra as Provincial Advisor for Spatial Quality (PARK). With this appointment, the province strengthens independent advice on the physical living environment. Veenstra started in February. He will advise the province over the next four years, both solicited and unsolicited, on policies and projects impacting spatial quality.

Abe Veenstra is an independent landscape architect with more than 30 years of experience. He was previously Provincial Advisor for Spatial Quality in South Holland and was part of the workshop for spatial quality Atelier Fryslân. Before that, he led the Arnhem office of Bosch Slabbers. He will use his knowledge and experience to act as a critical friend to reflect and inspire the province of Utrecht in making spatial choices.

Future-oriented

In his role, Veenstra wants to create connections and broaden the provinces perspective to the long term, so that we solve todays challenges and build coherent and future-proof landscapes: The spatial challenges in city and countryside are great and everything comes together in Utrecht. The tasks require connection and coherence, choices with an eye for the long term, and solutions that are truly future-proof. The regional scale is crucial here, and I see a key role for the province in safeguarding and developing spatial quality. I want to contribute by organizing conversations, advising, and inspiring. One of the valuable tools I want to use for this is design research.

Collaboration

The PARK is a special advisor and part of Utrecht Advice, the independent advisory body of the province of Utrecht. From this position, he will advise both the Provincial Executive and Provincial Council. He works together with the recently established advisory council for the physical living environment. Additionally, the PARK advises on large area developments, participates in quality teams, and maintains connections with the national network of advisors, such as the College of Government Advisors.
