This year, road managers can more easily apply for subsidies for facilities and measures that benefit pedestrians. The subsidy comes from an existing scheme. By simplifying the application, the province hopes more subsidies will go towards walking measures.

With the simplified application, road managers need to provide fewer details. For example, the cost estimate is less detailed and a sketch of the intended facility is sufficient. A maximum subsidy of 40,000 euros per year applies per applicant. The application can include multiple measures.

Examples of subsidizable measures

The simplified application is intended for concrete, infrastructural walking measures, such as:

  • safer pedestrian crossings by narrowing the roadway;
  • improving the accessibility of bus and tram stops for people with disabilities, improving the route to them, and an accessible footpath to/from bicycle parking facilities in the immediate vicinity of the stop;
  • the construction or improvement of footpaths, with a focus on traffic safety.

More attention for walking in provincial and national policy

With the simplified application, we want to lower the threshold for applying for a subsidy and give an extra impulse to improving the quality of walking facilities, in line with the provincial ambition to stimulate walking to get from A to B. This also better implements the National Walking Master Plan external link.
