From October 1, the province of Utrecht is ready for the new gritting season. Gritting teams are on standby until May 1 to keep provincial roads and bike paths safe and accessible.

The province manages over 380 kilometers of provincial road and 250 kilometers of bike path. Our twelve road gritters and twelve bike path gritters are available 24 hours a day during winter weather conditions. Additionally, the province has access to 25 teams that can be deployed to quickly clear a bike path or road of snow.

Last Season

During the winter season of 2024-2025, we gritted 21 times. We used 981 tons of salt and the gritters together drove 20,056 kilometers. For the gritting actions, the province of Utrecht uses among other things an electric gritter.

Salt Supply

In our salt depots in Huis ter Heide and De Meern, a total of 2200 tons of salt is ready for this winter. During preventive gritting actions, where there is a chance of slipperiness, we typically spread only 12 grams of salt per square meter. During such an action, all provincial roads and bike paths are gritted within three hours.
