The provinces, including the Province of South Holland, have jointly prepared a national report on groundwater quality in the Netherlands. The ‘Groundwater Quality Netherlands 2024’ report (opens in a new window) provides an objective overview and a complete national picture of the presence of substances in groundwater and can serve as a reference for future policy.
Groundwater is essential for various uses such as drinking water, industry, nature, and agriculture. The report shows that groundwater quality is under pressure due to the presence of various substances, some of which are environmentally foreign. The quality of groundwater is relevant to the extent to which it can be used for different functions.
The report, prepared by Arcadis, shows that substances are found in groundwater at many locations and emphasizes the need for measures to keep groundwater clean and healthy. This national overview is therefore an important addition to existing assessments and provides valuable information for policymakers.
Broader Picture
The aim of this report is to map the current situation of groundwater in the Netherlands. This national report also shows which substances not regulated by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) occur in groundwater and provides a broader picture of the actual chemical status of groundwater. The report is thus an important supplement to the existing WFD assessments for groundwater. In those WFD assessments, the status is determined by looking at the regulated substances.
