Higher professional education (hbo) and university (wo) students increasingly live with their parents. Especially since the introduction of the social loan system, students move out less quickly. Of the students who graduated after five years in 2023, 43 percent continued to live at home. In 2016, this was 31 percent. This is according to new research by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI).

Students who started studying in 2015 fell under the social loan system. They were more likely to live at home until graduation (in 2020) than students who started a year earlier. After that, there was a slight increase.

The CBS and NIDI looked at students at higher professional education or university (wo) who started their studies before the age of twenty. This news report concerns students who took five years to complete their studies. Other study durations were also examined, showing a similar trend.

Men more often than women

Men are more likely to live with their parents than women. Of the men who finished their studies after five years in 2020, 52 percent had not moved out. For women, this was 34 percent. In 2016, these figures were 40 and 24 percent respectively. Between 2021 and 2023, the percentage of men living at home decreased slightly, while for women it increased slightly.
