Her Majesty Queen Máxima has registered as a reservist for the Royal Netherlands Army. She was appointed as a soldier by Royal Decree as of February 1. As of today, she has started the training she will follow this year. The training includes all practical and theoretical military components necessary to become a reservist with the Royal Netherlands Army.

Queen Máxima chose to register now because our security is no longer taken for granted and she, like many others, wants to contribute to that security. The age limit also plays a role. Currently, it is possible to be appointed as a reservist with the Army up to the age of 55. After completing her training, she will receive the rank of lieutenant colonel. Like other reservists, she will commit herself where needed.

Reservists play a crucial role in supporting the regular armed forces and can be called up for military service. Reservists are active in all branches of Defence, especially in times of increasing tension. Working as a reservist is voluntary but not without obligations. There are several mandatory meetings such as participation in exercises, theory days, and maintaining basic military skills.

There has traditionally been a close bond between the armed forces and the Royal House. William of Orange was a military leader; later kings held supreme command. King Willem-Alexander fulfilled his military service with the Royal Navy; afterwards, he served with the Royal Army and the Royal Air Force. The Princess of Orange is now a corporal and follows the Defensity College program.
