It is around half past eight on Monday evening, April 14, when officers stop two people in a car on S.F. van Osstraat in Nieuw West. The car - with a foreign license plate - turns out not to be registered with the Road Traffic Agency (RDW).
In the car, officers find a trunk full of bags. In one of the bags, there are several dozen boxes of medicines. These may be medicines that can only be obtained in the Netherlands with a prescription. Additionally, the two have cash worth nearly 15,000 euros in total.
The two suspects - a 48-year-old man from Almere and a 46-year-old woman from Zwanenburg - have been arrested on suspicion of money laundering. Money laundering is a way to bring dirty money into the economy. Its goal is to disguise the illegal origin of money. Money laundering is thus a form of undermining.
There are various forms of undermining where the boundaries between the upper world (the ordinary society) and the underworld (crime) blur. You can see undermining as the constant pounding of organized crime on our society. Undermining is a problem that weakens and ultimately even disrupts society.
To tackle undermining, the help of the citizen is indispensable. Keep your neighborhood safe! If you see, hear, or smell something suspicious, report it! Contact via 0900-8844. If you want to report something anonymously, you can do so via 0800-7000.
