Advice remains: do not go on the road if it is not necessary.

Road users in the north and northeast of the country should also expect treacherous icy conditions due to freezing rain on the night of Friday 23 and Saturday morning 24 January. In Groningen there is also a chance of snow. The KNMI has issued an orange code for this.

Icy conditions caused by freezing rain are often difficult to see, resulting in dangerous driving conditions. The urgent advice for road users in the provinces where the orange code applies is therefore: do not go on the road if it is not necessary. Tonight it will be locally slippery in the north and northeast due to freezing of wet road sections (yellow code).

Slippery road treatment

To combat the slippery conditions, we deploy gritters. The emergency machines, the Lavastorm and the Firestorm, are also ready to be deployed in case of ice patches.

On the website Rijkswaterstaatstrooit you can see where the gritters are driving and where grit has been spread. The site also shows how much salt has been spread.

Advice to road users

  • Check weather and traffic information before departure. Via the website Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information we share the current situation on the road.
  • Be well prepared before you leave.
  • Adjust your driving style to the conditions, keep sufficient distance and do not change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Give gritters space.
