The maintenance work on the discharge works of Lock III in the Wilhelminakanaal in Tilburg was completed in the week of January 19, 2026.
The discharge works were not functioning properly and leaked too much water when closed. This affected water management and the safety of the installation. On Friday, January 23, 2026, the discharge works were put back into normal operation.
The sluice gate that controls the water was fully lifted out of the discharge works. It was then preserved and overhauled. Meanwhile, temporary provisions maintained water management.
During replacement, seals (rubbers), lifting eyes, the wheelset, bearings, and the leaf spring were replaced. Pipes and chains were inspected and repaired or replaced where necessary. Additionally, the concrete in the discharge channel was repaired where needed. On the front side of the gate, plates were placed on both sides to prevent debris. The work was carried out by contractor Van Doorn from Geldermalsen.
Discharge Works Thoroughly Tested
After completion of the work, the functioning of the discharge works was thoroughly tested. The gate now operates as intended and can be regularly operated again from Friday, January 23. This improvement enhances the reliability of the discharge works and maintains water management in the area.
Maintenance of Waterways in Southern Netherlands
We continuously work on accessible waterways, water quality, safety, and ecological values around water. Together with others, we ensure management and maintenance of waterways in Southern Netherlands and the construction, maintenance, and design of waterworks, banks, and floodplains.
We always seek common ground among many requirements, wishes, and interests. However, inconvenience and disruptions cannot always be avoided. We minimize these as much as possible and communicate in time.
