From March 1, 2026, we have a new subsidy to make shops, hospitality, and social institutions in Haarlem more accessible. Together, we take steps to enable all residents and visitors of Haarlem to participate.
The subsidy runs in 2026 and 2027. Each year, a total of €145,000 is available. There is a maximum of €20,000 per application. Applications are processed in the order they are received. Once the budget is exhausted, the scheme stops.
Who is the subsidy for?
The subsidy is for hospitality entrepreneurs, shop owners, foundations, and social organizations. It concerns existing places where people come to shop, eat, meet, or participate in activities.
Owners can apply for subsidies for physical adjustments that literally remove barriers. Examples include an automatic door opener, an adapted threshold, a wheelchair-accessible toilet, or a wider passage. Other measures are also possible if they clearly improve accessibility. Are you a tenant? Then you can also apply for a subsidy with the owners permission.
Advice leads to implementation
To make Haarlem more accessible, we work together with the ambassadors of Accessible Haarlem. These ambassadors volunteer for this cause. In 2025, they went out for the SME Accessible Route. They tested various hospitality venues and shops in Haarlem for accessibility for people with disabilities. Owners of the hospitality and shops on the route then received an overview with advice for improvement. With this subsidy, they can now implement those advices.
Therefore this subsidy
We want everyone to feel welcome in Haarlem. Accessible locations make it easier to participate independently. This helps residents with disabilities but also the elderly, parents with strollers, and people with temporary injuries. Step by step, we work towards an accessible city.
Applications
You can apply for the subsidy from March 1, 2026, on the page Subsidy to increase physical accessibility. There you will also find all conditions and explanations about the application. Do you have questions? We are happy to help you further.
