Source: Provincial Council

With the departure of Mirjam Sterk as deputy for Transition Rural Area, Nature and Agriculture, Green Grows Along and Europe, the search for a replacement has begun. When can a new deputy start? And how does it work? We explain it to you in 5 steps.

Step 1: Application

A new deputy is recruited through an application procedure. Mirjam Sterk was a member of the Executive Board of Deputies on behalf of the CDA. This means that this party is responsible for nominating a new candidate. When this application process is completed, the CDA announces a name.

Step 2: Introduction during the Provincial Council meeting

During a public Provincial Council meeting, the CDA faction will nominate the candidate deputy. This person introduces themselves to the Provincial Council. Then there is room for council members to ask questions.

Step 3: Committee of vote counting

After the question round, the chairman appoints a committee of vote counting. This is a group of four council members responsible for the voting process.

Step 4: Voting

The usher distributes a ballot paper to all council members present in the council chamber. Then each council member casts their vote. When all votes have been counted, the chairman of the vote counting committee announces the result of the vote.

Step 5: Swearing-In

When the candidate deputy has a majority of votes, this person is immediately sworn in. He or she takes the oath or promise to the chairman of the Provincial Council. Then there is a congratulation moment and the new deputy can start working.
