Maastricht climbs to the top in the national ranking.

The Atlas for Municipalities 2026 shows that Maastricht is this years biggest riser in terms of residential attractiveness and broad prosperity. Our city rose from 40th to 34th place in residential attractiveness and shows clear improvement in 4 of the 8 components of broad prosperity, including safety, work and education, material prosperity, and work-life balance.

This progress is the result of years of commitment to safety, livability, economic opportunities, and social cohesion. Investments in culture, sports, education, accessibility, and sustainability have contributed to a more pleasant and safer living environment.

Mayor Hillenaar: “This is a wonderful confirmation that our joint efforts are working. It motivates us to continue building a city with residents, entrepreneurs, and partners where it is good to live, work, and reside.”
