How do we keep Drenthe a pleasant place to live, work, and recreate towards 2050? This question is central in the new concept Environmental Vision ‘Horizon of Drenthe’. The province will discuss the concept in the coming weeks with municipalities, water boards, social organizations, and knowledge partners. Additionally, we gather residents opinions through a survey on the opportunities, dilemmas, and choices ahead.
“Drenthe chooses broad prosperity. This means not only attention to the economy but especially to what makes life here good: peace, space, nature, health, and connectedness,” says Deputy Yvonne Turenhout. “The challenges are significant in housing, energy, agriculture, and climate. But together we look at how Drenthe can grow into the future without losing its identity.”
Three Main Ambitions for 2050
The concept Environmental Vision describes three interconnected ambitions for Drenthe:
- A Future-Proof Rural Area
We ensure healthy soil, clean water, and space for sustainable agriculture and strong nature. Drenthe must be resilient to drought, flooding, and heat, with a landscape that adapts to the changing climate. - A Vital Society
We focus on lively villages and strong communities, with sufficient housing, employment, and nearby facilities. Good accessibility and cooperation between regions are necessary for this.
- A Beautiful, Clean, Healthy, and Safe Drenthe
We work towards a safe, clean, and healthy living environment. New developments contribute to an environment that can continue to renew itself and adapt to needs, while preserving Drenthe’s quality and recognizability.
How Drenthe Contributes to the Concept Environmental Vision
We involve Drenthe in various ways in the concept Environmental Vision. On Thursday, December 4, the province organizes the event ‘Horizon in Sight’ for more than 100 invited representatives from social organizations, government, education, and business. Together we discuss the concept vision and the choices involved. Residents participate in this phase through a targeted survey among a panel, conducted by a research agency.
Next Steps
The results of the discussions and the residents’ survey will be used for the draft Environmental Vision. In 2026, this will be submitted to the Provincial Council and then made available for public inspection. Everyone can then respond with a viewpoint. This creates a vision that is not only about Drenthe but also made together with Drenthe.
