With this scheme, the province wants to continue investing in a society where everyone feels welcome and seen, regardless of background, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Organizations can use the subsidy to organize meetings, training sessions, dialogue and meeting projects, or knowledge sharing that contribute to an inclusive society.

Why this subsidy?

The need to address this is great. Research by the Sociaal Planbureau Groningen and Trendbureau Drenthe shows that four out of five residents believe polarization is increasing. Our society is hardening. Therefore, the province wants to continue investing in initiatives that strengthen connection and reduce discrimination.

The subsidy scheme aligns with provincial ambitions from the coalition agreement Mit Mekoar 2025-2027 and the Livability Vision 2024-2035. These state that the Province of Groningen is committed to a safe, accessible, and inclusive environment for all residents.

In 2025, various organizations used the scheme, including the Mennonite Church, Refugee Foundation, Pride Foundation, and GROENN Foundation. Celine Moess (GROENN Foundation) talks about the project she organized:

“Thanks to this subsidy, we were able to organize a practical workshop in which organizers learned what inclusion and accessibility mean. Upon arrival, we let everyone experience what it is like to have to drive over a cable threshold in a wheelchair, invited experts and experienced professionals, and developed a handout with a step-by-step plan and concrete tips. The great thing is that several festivals now really apply these insights. This shows that a relatively small investment directly leads to more accessible and equitable events in our region.”

Who can apply for subsidy?

Foundations, associations, and municipalities in the Province of Groningen can submit an application. There are two subsidy amounts: 5,000 euros for small local initiatives and up to 20,000 euros for initiatives that cross municipal boundaries. With this, the province hopes to stimulate cooperation between municipalities and increase the reach of the initiative.
In 2026, subsidy can be applied for in two application periods. The first application period runs from March 2, 2026, to May 31, 2026, view the application form here.
