According to Deputy Marc van Caldenberg, more physical activity is important for good health. “Sport and exercise are of great importance for the health and well-being of our Limburg residents. That is why the province is strongly committed to this. Cooperation across municipal borders is essential. By joining forces, we ensure that more South Limburgers can participate in sports and exercise in a way that is fun, safe, and healthy,” said Van Caldenberg.

On March 2, 2026, the Province of Limburg and sixteen South Limburg municipalities signed a Regional Sports and Exercise Agreement at community center ’t Geboew in Schin op Geul. Beek, Beekdaelen, Brunssum, Eijsden-Margraten, Gulpen-Wittem, Heerlen, Kerkrade, Landgraaf, Maastricht, Meerssen, Simpelveld, Sittard-Geleen, Stein, Vaals, Valkenburg aan de Geul, and Voerendaal are collaborating to get more Limburg residents moving and make sports accessible to everyone.

Three ambitions

The regional agreement focuses on three ambitions:

  • a socially safe sports climate;
  • access to sports and exercise for everyone;
  • a strong and future-oriented swimming and exercise landscape.

Also in the IKS region South Limburg, municipalities are starting their cooperation today to promote sports and exercise for people with disabilities.

Governments, social organizations, and sports partners are working together. They ensure that sports and exercise remain accessible, attractive, and ready for the future for all Limburg residents.

Everyone in motion

The municipalities are further elaborating the agreements and taking concrete steps. They develop projects and provide customized solutions per municipality. This way, every Limburger, young and old, with or without disabilities, gets the chance to participate in sports and exercise in a safe environment.
