The Province of Utrecht takes a new step in sustainable logistics. From now on, coffee deliveries from MAAS to the province are also delivered via Hub Utrecht East (HUO). This increases the number of organizations choosing efficient and sustainable supply through joint parcel bundling in Utrecht East.

Hub Utrecht East is an independent goods hub for the Utrecht East area. The hub collects goods outside the area, at Winthontlaan in Westraven. Then the goods are bundled and transported with zero-emission vehicles to the final destination in Rijnsweerd or at the USP. This results in fewer traffic movements, less emissions, and better air quality. It also improves accessibility and livability in the area. The hub mainly focuses on Rijnsweerd and the Utrecht Science Park (USP).

Province sets a good example

The Province of Utrecht consciously uses Hub Utrecht East. It aims to encourage other organizations in the area to also choose this sustainable solution. This fits with the provincial policy for sustainable logistics and sustainable procurement.

An additional benefit for users is that deliveries no longer arrive spread throughout the day. Instead, goods are delivered bundled at fixed times, for example once a week. This provides calm and overview at goods reception.

André van Schie, Deputy for Mobility and Economy of the Province of Utrecht: “Parcel deliveries via Hub Utrecht East fit well with our ambition to make the last urban part of goods transport in Utrecht sustainable and emission-free. By routing our deliveries to the provincial office in cooperation with our suppliers also via Hub Utrecht East, we set a good example ourselves. Together we ensure less traffic, cleaner air, and a more accessible and healthy city.”

More companies joining

Since the start in 2022, the number of companies using HUO has grown. Especially at the Utrecht Science Park, the hub reaches more and more organizations. In Rijnsweerd, this still lags somewhat. That is why it is important to draw attention to the possibilities of the hub at this moment.

In new tenders, the province stipulates where possible that deliveries go through HUO. In February 2024, the first package from Lyreco was delivered to the province via the hub. Now the coffee deliveries from MAAS also join. The deliveries from Lyreco and MAAS are combined into one weekly delivery moment.

George Schoof, CEO of MAAS: “Sustainable entrepreneurship starts with smart cooperation throughout the chain. By joining Hub Utrecht East, we accelerate the greening of our logistics. Thanks to the stimulating role of the Province of Utrecht, we make sustainable supply not an ambition, but the new standard.”

With this step, MAAS and the Province of Utrecht underline their joint commitment to sustainable and future-proof logistics in Utrecht East. Hub Utrecht East invites other organizations in Rijnsweerd and at the Utrecht Science Park to also join. Together we ensure less traffic, less emissions, and a more pleasant living environment.
