The Province of Utrecht has renewed the subsidy scheme for the energy transition to better meet current needs to accelerate the energy transition. With this subsidy scheme, we support municipalities, entrepreneurs, resident initiatives, social organizations, and other partners in developing sustainability projects focused on energy savings and utilizing sustainable heat sources. We also encourage innovative projects, such as energy hubs, to seek collective solutions that make efficient use of the electricity grid.

Huib van Essen, as deputy responsible for the energy transition: “Significant steps are already being taken in the energy transition in the Province of Utrecht. With this renewed subsidy scheme, we focus on energy savings and efficient use of the electricity grid. Together with our partners, we are moving towards a future-proof and sustainable energy system.”

The Scheme

Despite grid congestion (‘traffic jam on the electricity grid’), we must move towards an integrated and innovative energy system where energy is generated and used as locally as possible. The subsidy scheme addresses this. For example, there is subsidy for preparing and realizing energy hubs. Additionally, we focus on energy savings at companies and social organizations, greening work locations, and small-scale local generation of sustainable energy.

There is also subsidy for making the existing housing stock gas-free. For municipalities’ heat plans, research and consultation with neighborhoods are necessary, especially when laying heat networks. Municipalities can receive subsidies for this. Subsidies are also possible for resident initiatives working on greening their own neighborhoods. Furthermore, limited budget is available for pilot projects and organizing activities, especially for homeowners who are hard to reach for municipalities.
