On International Wheelchair Day (March 1), wheelchair users worldwide celebrate their wheelchairs because they provide the freedom to go outside and participate in public life. The Province of South Holland wholeheartedly supports this! With subsidies, support, and attention, because our society can and must become even more accessible.
Adapted Sports
Exercise is very important. It is so healthy and good to go outside, says Anne Koning, Deputy for Recreation, Tourism and Sports. And she is absolutely right, but if you have a disability, this is not always easy. That is why the Province of South Holland has been working closely with the Disabled Sports Fund for several years and contributes to projects by sports clubs, associations, or non-profit foundations that get people with disabilities moving. We do this through the Unique Sports Crowdfunding Platform (opens in new window).
Anne Koning, Deputy for Sports: The Unique Sports platform ensures that there are places where people with disabilities can go outside to exercise and move. And people with disabilities can also find the sport that suits them, arrange sports aids, and find workouts for home via Unique Sports so they get moving.

Wheelchair-Accessible Toilet Facilities, Changing Rooms, and Play Equipment
The Province of South Holland is also committed to attractive places where people can exert themselves, relax, and meet. Among other things, we help make tourist and recreational places more accessible with subsidies. For example, the Boskoop Boat Tours and Promotion Foundation received a subsidy last year from the Tourism in Balance scheme to make their boat accessible for wheelchair users. With a special lift and modifications to the boat, wheelchair users can now safely and comfortably join the boat trips.
Through the Quality Impulse Recreation subsidy scheme, we also support several petting zoos and playgrounds with the installation of play equipment suitable for children with disabilities. And we ensure the installation of wheelchair-friendly toilet facilities and changing rooms in several recreational areas so that even more people can enjoy our beautiful province.
