Deputy Matthijs de Vries calls to make use of the subsidy scheme: “We want to encourage and facilitate holders of farm animals as best as possible to take preventive measures. Therefore, we have expanded the current subsidy scheme again. This makes it possible for a larger group of animal holders to purchase wolf-repellent materials.”
Adjustment
The expanded ‘Subsidy scheme to prevent damage by wolves in the province of Fryslân’ was established together with the Gebietskommisje Wolf. Chairman Harry Oosterman: “The adjusted scheme provides more clarity about the amount of data an animal holder must submit regarding their registered animals in the Identification and Registration System.” Additionally, it is now also possible to use the subsidized materials in neighboring provinces. Even if someone does not reside in Fryslân but keeps their animals here, a subsidy can be applied for. The current subsidy scheme duration was until May 6, 2026, and has been extended until October 5, 2027.
Change of subsidy area
Due to recent developments in the presence and activities of wolves in Fryslân, the College of Deputies has decided to expand the subsidy area. Animal holders in the municipalities of Heerenveen, Ooststellingwerf, Opsterland, Smallingerland, and Weststellingwerf have already been able to use the scheme for some time.
Furthermore, the name of the subsidy area has been changed to Subsidy area wolves Fryslân to avoid confusion with areas for protected species, such as the wolf, which are included in the Habitats Directive. The subsidy area is purely a geographical boundary for holders with hoofed animals in that area who can apply for subsidies for wolf-repellent fences. The maximum subsidy amount per application remains €30,000.
