Ten percent of the 1.7 million people aged 60 and over below the AOW age retired earlier than the AOW age. This amounts to 167,800 people at the end of 2024. 1.3 million people aged 60 and over have built up an additional pension with an employer. Women more often do not have additional pension accrual with an employer than men. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on new figures.
The share of people aged 60 and over below the AOW age who are already retired is decreasing. In 2024, 10 percent have a pension benefit as their main income. In 2014, this was still 16 percent. The AOW age increased from 65 years and two months to 67 years between 2014 and 2024. A pension benefit can be an early retirement pension built up through the employer, but also a survivors pension.

In 2024, nearly half of the people in their sixties below the AOW age have a main income from work as an employee. In 2014, this was 37 percent. People in their sixties below the AOW age have unemployment benefits less often in 2024 (2 percent) than in 2014 (4 percent). The right to unemployment benefits was a maximum of 38 months in 2014, while in 2024 it is a maximum of two years.

The group of self-employed increases from 10 percent to 13 percent. In 2024, 9 percent of people aged 60 and over below the AOW age have no own income; in 2014, this was still 15 percent. Of the people without own income, 80 percent share a household with a partner who does have income in 2024.
