The latest identification was announced today by Interpol. Ainoha Izaga Ibieta Lima from Paraguay was found on August 6, 2018, in Spain. Despite extensive research, her identity could not be established at the time. On October 8, Interpol launched the second Identify Me campaign. Six countries participated in this campaign, including Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, along with the Netherlands. A total of 46 cases were included. Most of the women died due to violence or under suspicious circumstances. Eleven of the women on the list have been found in the Netherlands.
Breakthrough
The breakthrough in the Spanish case came when the police in Paraguay compared the fingerprints of the women from the Identify Me campaign with the fingerprints in their own database. Interpol congratulates the authorities in Spain and Paraguay on the identification, says Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza: Our work is not only about solving cases; it is also about restoring dignity for victims and giving a voice to those affected by tragedy. Every identification brings new hope that the other unknown women who are part of this campaign will also regain their identity.
New Hope
Martin de Wit from the National Team for Investigative Communication of the Dutch police (PDC) is also hopeful: Our expectation was already that the solution for these cases must be sought internationally, and that expectation has now been confirmed twice. We appreciate that Interpol is so committed to these cases. We expect that international attention will lead to more identifications. The key lies in international cooperation but also in the public that can help by viewing the victims photos and sharing information about the cases with the police.
