Significantly more homes will be built in the Havenmeesterskwartier than previously planned. The municipality of Arnhem and developer BPD | Bouwfonds Gebiedsontwikkeling have agreed to expand the housing program by 150 to 200 additional homes. This increases the total from about 400 to a maximum of around 600 homes.
Paul Smeulders, alderman for Housing: “The housing shortage is high and many Arnhem residents are looking for an affordable place to live. Every place where we can add homes to the city is valuable, especially affordable homes and social rental homes. This beautiful location, close to the city center, makes it extra valuable.”
Havenmeesterskwartier
The Havenmeesterskwartier is prominently located between the Nederrijn and the old city. The area, currently vacant, will become a livable part of the city in the future, serving as a link between the upcoming Cobercokwartier, where homes are currently for sale and under construction, and the completed Gashouderskwartier. The new plan mainly includes more apartments. The number of ground-level homes remains approximately the same. The plans assume 175 additional homes, consisting of 75 social rental apartments, 75 mid-range rental apartments, and 25 affordable owner-occupied homes. The old plan included about 400 homes.
Car-free and livable
Parking for residents will take place within the residential blocks. This keeps the public space largely car-free. Visitors will park on the edges of the area. This creates more space for greenery, playing, and socializing.
