The dog tax inspection started this week. Our inspectors are visiting residents throughout the municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch to check if there is a dog present. If so, they verify whether dog tax is being paid.
Why an inspection?
Anyone who owns a dog must pay dog tax. Not everyone who owns a dog registers it with the Tax Department. Therefore, we regularly check whether dog tax is paid for every dog.
Who conducts the inspections?
The inspections are carried out by employees of the company Legitiem B.V. They can identify themselves with an ID card from the municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
Fine
If the inspector notices that you have a dog for which you have not filed a declaration, you will be fined. This fine is €108 and is in addition to the tax payable.
Inspector at the door, what now?
If an inspector finds a dog at your home that you have not registered with the Tax Department, you will receive a letter. If you are not at home, the inspector will leave the letter in the mailbox. If you are home, we will send you the letter by post within approximately four weeks.
The letter states that you must pay dog tax, that you will receive a fine, and what you can do if you believe the inspectors finding is incorrect. You will receive the dog tax assessment with fine at the end of June 2026. If you disagree with the assessment, you can file an objection after receiving the assessment notice.
