The plan for this Leisure zone includes the construction of, among other things, a small soccer field, exercise equipment, a ping pong table, and picnic areas. Additionally, attention is given to education: elements will be added to make learning about nature and water fun and accessible for all ages. The outdoor courts for pétanque and the multifunctional adaptation of the building are part of the initiative. The residents of Posterholt are actively involved in further shaping the recreational area made available by the demolition of the old primary school.

Strengthening Social Bonds

Deputy Michael Theuns emphasizes the importance of carrying out this project together with residents and social partners. “By working together with the people who use it and the social partners needed to make this happen, we strengthen social bonds and thereby improve livability in Roerdalen. The Leisure zone in Posterholt is a great example of this. It’s wonderful to see!”

Alderman Jan Smits is pleased with the signing of the agreement: “In Roerdalen, we want every resident to have the opportunity to participate in society. Our focus in this project is on moving, meeting, playing, and learning for young and old. I look forward to realizing this project and thereby contributing to the livability in Posterholt.”

Joint Effort

The Province of Limburg is making up to 840,000 euros available through the Livability Subsidy, with the Municipality of Roerdalen contributing at least the same amount. The municipal council will make a decision on this in the summer of 2026.

With this joint effort, the Province and Municipality aim to create a safe, healthy, and social living environment in Posterholt. The approach is part of the broader Limburg Livability approach that supports initiatives to strengthen livability in villages and cities in our province.
