For the second year in a row, people with Syrian nationality submitted fewer asylum applications than the year before. In 2025, this was 3.3 thousand applications, 71 percent less than a year earlier (11.5 thousand). Despite this decrease, Syrians submitted the most applications. The number of applications from people with Eritrean nationality doubled from 1.5 thousand in 2024 to 3.1 thousand in 2025. They are the second largest group of applicants after Syrians.
People with Iraqi nationality submitted 575 asylum applications, 1.6 thousand fewer than a year earlier. In previous years, the number of applications had increased, up to 2.2 thousand in 2024.
In 2025, 16.5 thousand family members reunited in the Netherlands, 4.6 thousand more than the year before. This is the highest recorded number since 2013. 12.1 thousand family reunifications came from Syria, almost three quarters of the total, and 39 percent more than a year earlier.
There were also 1.5 thousand family reunifications from Yemen, 76 percent more than a year earlier.
